Alla Prima Series: Surprised Man

Join Kai as he creates an Alla Prima portrait in oil paints. Creating portraits with strong expressions is challenging, but also fun! Throughout the video, Kai shares tips and techniques for achieving a successful portrait painting, such as emphasizing beautiful shapes in the reference photo, but also being willing to paint what is actually seen. Kai encourages viewers to challenge themselves to observe and capture every shape, even those that may be less appealing.

This demonstration is taken from Kai's Alla Prima Mentorship program, and was filmed live with students asking questions. (1+ hours)

Kai Lun Qu

Kai Lun Qu is know for his alla prima paintings filled with expression and painterly strokes that evoke deep emotions. His unique blend of traditional style with a contemporary twist is a result of two extremes: a formal training in China’s most prestigious art academy, China Central Academy of Fine Arts and intense studies with renown contemporary painters like Daniel Keys, Tim Rees and Michelle Dunaway in the United States. 
In 2018, He was featured in Southwest Art Magazine, 21 under 31: Young Artists to Watch.
