Quick Landscape Impressions

Wondering what renowned landscape painter Josh Clare's secret is? Paint fast and paint from life. That way, he is able to handle all types of scenes—any location, any weather. Today you'll learn to do the same! Josh's first lesson is on capturing the impression of what's in front of you instead of laboring over a heavily-detailed work right from the beginning. To illustrate this, we're throwing you four different scenes: clouds, mountains, a snow bank, and a Maui beach. Set a timer and stick to the basics, like a simple color palette, broad brushstrokes, and fast impressions to get in more practice in less time. ( 3+ hours)

Josh Clare

Josh Clare grew up drawing and was rarely without a pencil and paper, but it wasn’t until he began studying art at BYU-Idaho that he began painting. That first oil painting class included a trip to the galleries in Jackson Hole (his first visit to an art gallery or museum) and completely changed the course of his life.
Josh has been supporting himself and his family with art since 2007 after graduation and he thanks God every day for that remarkable blessing. He figures that if he can paint all day, every day, for the next 20 years, eventually he’ll paint something pretty decent.
